Jimmy Allen

Boatman

 

Jimmy has been a boatman since 1971. On leaving school, he completed a 5 year apprenticeship and is a qualified boatbuilder. He spent a short time at sea before joining the Fowey boatmen.

Jimmy is married to Laura. They have one son and live in Polruan.

     

Nathan Perkin

Boatman

 

Nathan is the third son of a former Fowey Pilot, Joel Perkin. On leaving school he did a 1 year government scheme in road haulage and engineering. Then he spent one year at sea with Vanol Shipping on the Johanna V.

Later Nathan fished out of Fowey before working for Fowey Harbour Commissioners.

He has been a Fowey boatman since 1990. Most of his life has been spent on the river and as a surfer of 24 years he feels he is fairly 'soggy'.

He lives in Tywardreath with his partner Jess and their two children.

Andy Dunn

Boatman

 

Andy was previously an engineering manager at an aerospace factory manufacturing gas turbine components. This was not enough of a challenge though and in 1990 he moved back to Cornwall to become a Par Boatman. He worked alongside his father until Roger's retirement in 2001.

Andy is married to Tracy, they have four children and live in Par

     

Jonathan Rashleigh

Boatman

 

Jonathan became a Fowey boatman at the age of 22 in 1974. He is experienced in the operation and maintenance of plant and machinery with limited electrical engineering and computer skills

He is presently acquiring woodworking and masonry skills in a home-making project.

He is a committed family man and amateur gardener, naturalist and photographer.

     

John Averill

Boatman

 


On leaving school John trained as an Engineering Officer with P & O. He later went on to complete an engineering apprenticeship with Tourell Engineering of St Blazey. For a time he worked as a Commercial Fisherman before becomming a Par Boatman in 1979 thanks to then Pilot Dennis Beynon.

John currently runs a small holding near Roche which he has been developing over recent years. John is married to Jenny and has two children.

     

Alan Beresford

Boatman

 

Alan has been a boatman for over 25 years. He served in the Army and the Royal Navy, the last six of which were served in submarines.

Prior to joining the Fowey Boatmen Alan worked for Fowey Harbour Commissioners.

He is married to Avril, has two sons and lives in Polruan.

     

Tom Endean

Boatman

 

Tom spent the early years of his working life at Wagon Repairs, a subsidiary of British Rail. He later moved to Cornwall County Council to work as an HGV/Digger Driver.

In 1975 Tom followed in his father's footsteps and became a boatman at Par.

He lives in Biscovey and is married to Yvonne. They have two grown up children.

     

Lloyd Paynter

Pilotage Co-ordinator

 

Lloyd is employed by the Fowey Pilots' Association as a Pilotage Co-ordinator at our office on Par Harbour.

Educated at Fowey Comprehensive School and St Austell 6th Form College Lloyd originally worked for a local firm of Accountants for three years before joining English China Clays in 1977. He gained a wide range of experience of all aspects of the China Clay Industry during 14 years of service, which included a five-year spell with the Shipping Agents, South Coast UK working at the Ports of Par, Fowey and Charlestown. Since leaving English China Clays he has worked in the Oil, Aggregates and Ready Mixed Concrete Industries.

Lloyd was employed by the Fowey Pilots Association in October 2000 to develop the Par Office and improve record keeping systems to satisfy up to date Health and Safety Policies and associated legislation.
The principal role of Pilotage Co-ordinator is to provide a link (during normal office hours) between Pilots, Boatmen, Agents, Shippers and the vessels visiting the Ports of Par and Fowey.

Lloyds main hobbies and interests are Motorcycling (Instructing), Football, Rugby and Home Improvements. Married to Linda he has three children and lives at Luxulyan a small village close to the Eden Project

 

     

Clive Tregidgo

Boatman

 

Sadly Clive passed away earlier this year (2005) after a prolonged illness. Clive had been a Par boatman since 1976. Before that he spent some time at sea as an engineer, worked as an HGV/plant fitter and worked as a commercial diver.

Clive lived at Roche where his family runs a horse eventing/equestrian centre.
